Privacy policy

Last updated: 8 October 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how the ELR Track Locator mobile application ("the App") handles information. The App is provided by Christopher Lyon ("we", "us"), the data controller for the purposes of UK data protection law. You can contact us at clyon.industries@gmail.com.

The App is designed to work offline and to keep your data on your device wherever possible. We do not operate our own servers that store your personal data, and we do not sell your data.

In short

  • Your GPS location is used on your device to show your position on the railway. We do not collect it on our own servers.
  • Photos you take are saved to your device's own photo library. We do not upload them.
  • Files you import (KML/KMZ overlays) stay on your device.
  • If you subscribe, payment is handled by the app store you installed the App from (Google Play or the Apple App Store) and your subscription status is managed by RevenueCat. We never see your card details.
  • The App has no user accounts, no advertising, and no analytics of our own.

Information the App uses

Location. With your permission, the App reads your device's GPS location to place you on the railway network and calculate mileage/position. This is processed on your device. To draw the map, the App uses the platform's mapping service — the Google Maps SDK on Android and Apple Maps (MapKit) on iOS — which sends map requests to that provider and may include location/coordinate data, governed by that provider's privacy policy.

Camera and photos. If you use the photo feature, the App opens your camera and saves the resulting (watermarked) photo to your device's photo library. Photos are not transmitted to us.

Imported files. KML/KMZ overlay files you import are stored locally on your device and are not uploaded.

Subscriptions and purchases. If you buy a subscription, the transaction is processed by Google Play (Android) or the Apple App Store (iOS). We use RevenueCat to manage subscription entitlements. RevenueCat receives purchase information and a randomly generated app-user identifier (not your name or email) so the App knows which features you are entitled to. We do not receive or store your payment card details.

Diagnostics. Google Play, the Apple App Store and the SDKs above may collect standard technical and diagnostic information (such as device identifiers and crash data) to operate and secure their services, in line with their own policies.

Why we process this (legal bases, UK GDPR)

  • To provide the App's core function (showing your position): our legitimate interest in providing the service you requested, plus your consent to the location permission (which you can withdraw at any time in device settings).
  • To provide and manage subscriptions: performance of a contract with you.
  • To keep the services secure and working: our legitimate interests.

Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. Data is processed by the third-party providers that make the App work:

  • Google (Google Play, Google Maps Platform — Android) — https://policies.google.com/privacy
  • Apple (App Store, Apple Maps — iOS) — https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
  • RevenueCat (subscription management) — https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy

These providers may process data outside the UK (for example in the United States) under appropriate safeguards.

Retention

We do not hold your personal data on our own servers. Data held by Google, Apple and RevenueCat is retained under their policies. Photos and imported files remain on your device until you delete them.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have rights to access, correct or erase your personal data, to restrict or object to processing, and to data portability. Because we do not hold personal data on our own servers, most data is either under your control on your device or held by the providers above. Contact us at clyon.industries@gmail.com and we will help where we can, or direct you to the relevant provider. You may also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (https://ico.org.uk).

Children

The App is a professional tool intended for adults working on or near the railway. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes

We may update this policy; the "Last updated" date shows the current version. Material changes will be reflected in the App or its store listing.

This website

This website has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no cookies. Its fonts are served from this site rather than a third party. If you change the theme or the readout units, that choice is saved in your own browser's storage and never sent anywhere.

The footer shows how many miles of each page's railway line visitors have scrolled. To keep that total, the site sends the number of miles you scrolled (and which page) when you leave. It's added to a single running total per page; nothing about you or your device is sent or stored with it.

The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes the technical details of each request (such as your IP address) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. Questions about this website: clyon.industries@gmail.com.
